VC1221 Goes Caving

By way of introduction, we are Venturing Crew 1221 (Crew 1221 to our friends).  We represent the co-ed, older-youth program of the Boy Scouts of America and we are chartered right here in the Harbour (by the HOA).  What do we do?  Basically, we seek fun and adventure.

Recently, we went caving in West Virginia.  This wasn’t your typical commercial caving experience; this was a completely wild cave and we served as our own guides.  Everyone was outfitted with helmets, headlamps, kneepads, and gloves.  We made our way single-file – walking, crawling, scrambling – and penetrated almost a mile from the cave entrance.  At one point, we stopped and turned off our lights to just take in the whole experience.  We soon realized that without lights, we wouldn’t be able to make it out on our own.  It was scary and yet, so cool.  We gained an appreciation for this underground environment and for the fact that we had two backup light systems to our own headlamps.

Caving was fun, but we still prefer the super activity our Crew is best known for, S.C.U.B.A. diving.  Besides local diving, we have been to Bonaire, Cancun, and by the time you read this newsletter, some of us will be in Honduras’ Roatan Islands.  We’ll let you know about that event on the next newsletter.

Our next outing will be a Shenandoah River clean up on September 24.  We’ll join dozens of Venturers from the Washington D.C. area and pick-up litter from the river as we canoe along its banks.

Feel free to stop by and visit us during our monthly meetings at the Harbour Inn on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 P.M.  If you have reached your 14th birthday and completed the 8th grade, we would be glad to talk about membership.
