July 2003 NEWSLETTER ARTICLE Along with summer
pools, picnics and vacations come an untold number of children
out and about. Please be extra careful when driving as many
children act impulsively and tend to put themselves in harm?s
way. Without sidewalks they usually migrate to the roads.
The new trash contract with Coles Trash service starts July 1st.
As of this writing Waste Management and Coles have not come to
terms on the transfer of the existing trash totes. We have tried
to intercede but the parties are far apart. Should the worst
case scenario materialize it will mean exchanging the old totes
for a new one. Continue to use your current tote until it
disappears, if it ever does. New totes should be delivered as
you read this if not before. If after July 1st you suddenly find
yourself without please call the Business Office and we will do
our best to assist. For a short spell, in an emergency, it may
be necessary to use plastic garbage bags. Hopefully, it won?t
come to that.
The Roads and Grounds Crew has finished the base for the
vehicle/boat storage lot behind the stable. Fencing and lighting
will be installed in the near future. If you have an interest we
have a waiting list at the Business Office. With this task done
the crew have turned their attention to their normal seasonal
work. The top priority being cutting all the road shoulders and
along the walking paths. Installing swings in Rudolph Park and
extensive roadwork will follow this. The paving schedule is
being tentatively set however, until we have an engineer review
the road problems on Aquia Drive near Foresail Cove, we are not
going to commit to work as we ma have to do extensive
repairs/rebuilding in this area.
By now most have noticed the change in lighting at the gate. The
former lights were excellent from a security standpoint but
certainly left a lot to be desired from an esthetic view. The
staff and especially the Beautification Committee are all
working hard to give us an entrance of class. Thanks to all the
hard working volunteers.
The new Police Chief, Ronald Normandin, is rapidly fitting in to
the force and the Harbour. When you see him please welcome him
to the community. He brings us years of experience and is
dedicated to giving us the professional police force we want. We
recently took delivery of a new police car to replace the one
that was approaching 200,000 miles. Our Amber Alert System
Station is up and running. This puts us in the immediate loop
for missing children.
The wetland tradeoff agreement with VDOT is rapidly approaching
reality. The project has been advertised for construction and
bid opening should occur prior to this reaching print. We expect
construction to start in August. The most noticeable impact will
be the trucking of dirt from the end of Delaware Drive to the
top of the hill on Harpoon Drive (the once proposed school site)
to fill in a large depression. The work should take four to six
weeks.
The marina bathroom refurbishment contract has been let and work
will start as soon as the county permits are in hand. We plan on
doing both bathrooms simultaneously so porta johns will be used.
The goal is to complete the work by the end of July.
Work is underway in house at the marina to refinish and
stain/seal the wooden deck surfaces. Part time help will be
utilized to correct some electrical shortfalls and repair
deteriorated concrete deck sections. A priority is to have an
expert survey the entire facility and assist in developing a
long term plan to upgrade the facility.
The mason should have the circular brick wall in front of the
Business Office repaired by early July.
