February 2004 NEWSLETTER ARTICLE

As the nations leaders agonize over increasing and decreasing national threat conditions management, our police force and the Security Committee have been addressing ways to provide maximum security for the community with minimum disruption. Late at night, and well after peak traffic periods, all entering traffic is being diverted through the right hand side of the gate to provide positive identification. Please assist as this is for the security of all. Additionally, if you expect guests or workmen please call the gate and inform them of details. The phone numbers are 659-5224 and 659-7224. Failure to do this may result in your visitor being turned away or made to wait until they can be verified. Many don?t realize we have a constant radar readout on all vehicles transiting the gate. Those of you doing 40 to 50 mph please slow down. Our goal is not to write tickets. The speed limit is 25 mph and the guard needs time to visually identify the decal. We have had two cars run into the gate wall this past year. The Safety Committee and the Chief of police have recommended to the Board of Directors that we put some rumble strips outside the gate to warn and slow down traffic. This is under consideration.

Recently the market has been flooded with inexpensive small gas and electric motor scooters. Several residents report near misses with young children operating these vehicles and in several cases the children were not even wearing helmets. If your children have one of these scooters please keep them off the roads and riding at a more suitable location under adult supervision. We do not want to lose a child.

The recently opened vehicle storage lot is already full and we have a waiting list. It?s proven to be very successful. If we can find space additional ones will be considered.

The wetlands trade off project (promised for months) appears ready to start as material is being delivered. The space that will be opened on the hill off Harpoon Drive may provide some suitable land for additional storage lots as well recreational facilities.

The maintenance crews are busy cleaning ditches and patching potholes. A significant amount of inside work such as painting at the Harbour Inn Community Center is underway. Winter has been mild with little snow so far (this is written 2 weeks in advance) but our crews are ready for the inevitable snows.

Members of the Parks and Waterways Committee are developing plans to erect commercial banners around Tressler Field as a project to raise funds to support athletic teams. Anyone interested in helping please give us a call.

Many thanks to the individuals and organizations that donated money for defibrillator. We now have two on hand and they are being maintained in both police patrol cars. Plans are in the works to buy several more for placement at the Golf Course, Marina and Business Office.
