May 2003 Update

President's Review

Summer's Here.As you read this article, Aquia will be waking up to the full effects of summer. Our Children will be out of school; the pools will be open; boats will be on the road and in the water; and bikes, skates and walker will be everywhere.? Please remember to drive carefully and protect our most precious commodity ? our children. As you look for family things to do, let me encourage a day trip around Government Island and maybe a picnic lunch. The island is a wonderful resource hidden in our community. The trails should be clearly marked and dry (unless we have had a lot of rain).

Here is a summary of some of the key things developing in Aquia.

  • We have hired a new police Chief, Ronald Normandin. Chief Normandin is a retired Secret Service (Uniform Division) officer.  He held positions as Watch Commander for the Vice Presidents Residence, White House and Foreign Missions Branch.  Prior to coming to Aquia, he was an officer with the Metropolitan Police Department in DC. He was Top Officer in his Police Academy Class.  He is currently serving as a Stafford County Deputy Sheriff.  In 2000 he went back through the Police Academy and was top graduate. His resume speaks for itself. The new Chief will continue to follow the "community policing" policies of Chief Neville.
  • We have extended the Club House contract for three years. George and Robin White are doing a great job at the Club House. I recommend you try them for dinner or lunch.
  • We will soon begin the long overdue work to repair the bathrooms at the Marina.
  • The secure storage lot should soon be complete. Then the Board can start the hard work of developing a fair, reasonable, and workable plan for storage of boats, trailers, and recreational vehicles.
  • We are looking at options related to wireless internet in the Harbour. You will hear more on this as the Board explores options. Director Reinboldt has the lead on this item.
  • We are discussing options with the Aquia Harbour Volunteer Rescue Squad (AHVRS) and the Aquia Town Center management to expand the AHVRS facility and potentially add a fire truck. Consolidated fire and rescue in the gate area would be a great thing for Aquia Harbour.
  • The Board is still exploring Bingo options and hopes to have a final decision by the end of June.
  • And, finally, I think we will fix the lights at the front gate to make them both functional and attractive.
