February 2003 Update

Our Security

Many of you saw the editorial in the Free Lance Star about security in gated communities. I also hope you saw Chief Nevilles response. Statistically, we live in a VERY secure community. I chose not to reply to the Free Lance Starr when I saw the professional response developed by the Chief. Thank you Chief Neville. Also, I might add that sometimes it seems like there may be more crime in Aquia than there is because our security force is involved with catching the criminals. Recently there was an article in the paper about some identity theft. What the paper did not say was that Aquias police force was instrumental in solving this case. Thanks again to our total security force.

The debate about the second gate is beginning to run full course now and that is a health thing. I ask all of our residents to follow some basic principals of civility as we address this issue. We will not all agree. The Board is dedicated to doing what is best for Aquia in the long run. If I could give you a clear and accurate picture of Aquia and Stafford County in 20 years, I would be able to completely answer this question. (I would also be able to fix al my personal investment decisions.) Alas, I cannot see the future. At this time I see more negatives than positives associated with a second gate. A gate at Harpoon and Farragut seems unlikely. Some residents believe that a second gate off of Harpoon somewhere near the power lines would make sense. We do have about 11 acres of land at the top of that hill that could be very useful to Aquia. A school or a YMCA at that location could be a great asset for the community. One interesting off-shoot of the debate is the realization that many resident are unaware of the emergency gate in section three and how to get back to the highway from there. We need to do a much better job of getting this information out to the community.

The Board and the Finance Committee have completed work on the next years budget. We will see a very minor (less than the cost of living increase) increase. This increase is very reasonable and is needed to take care of the staff that supports us. Next year we will see significant improvements to the Club House and the Harbour Inn Community Center. In addition, we are finally going to upgrade the tennis courts and fence at the tennis courts. This is an eyesore that has needed repair for some time.
